#MaterialMonday - The Sandpaper Numbers are one of the very first materials introduced in our Math area! Using the Sandpaper Numbers, children are taught to identify and order numerals 0-9. The numbers printed on each tablet are textured with sandpaper, which provides a tactile learning experience. As the child is introduced to the numbers, they are asked to trace over the sandpaper using their finger. As they trace, they internalize the formation of the number shapes through muscle memory and sensory experience.
The Sandpaper Numbers are initially taught using the Three-Period Lesson, which has three distinct stages. In the first stage, the teacher introduces the names of numbers to the child. In the next stage, the teacher engages the child in games to help with retention and identification. Our students love to play “Knock Knock”, a game in which they place each numeral face down, knock on them, and then flip them over to reveal and identify which numeral they’ve chosen. In the third stage, the child is asked to tell the teacher each numeral. Once the child is able to recognize and identify the numbers, the Sandpaper Numbers can be extended upon and used for ordering or quantification.
